Key Features and Operating Principles

Stepper Motor System

The key elements of a stepper motor include a Motor and Driver. A stepper motor is typically powered by DC systems, but some AC Synchronous Motors for better performance.

Feedback System

There is no feedback system in a stepper motor application. It is an open-loop system that relies on the sequence and timing of the electrical pulses to move to the desired position.

Control System

The control circuit (controller/driver) sends pulses to the motor. The goal is to control speed and position. The control circuit software will adjust for any errors by indexing from it's home position.

Gear System

Many stepper motors include a gear system with different torque characteristics depending on the operating speed.  At low speeds, stepper motors typically provide high torque, making them suitable for low power applications. However, torque decreases as speed increases.
